Positioning Your Investment for Growth - Conference Day 2

The second day of the Russia & CIS Hotel Investment Conference (RHIC), held at the Radisson Royal Hotel Moscow, has opened its sessions with a macro-economic overview of Russia and the CIS region from Chris Weafer, Chief Strategist at Sberbank Investment Research followed by Dr Daniel Thorniley, President of DT-Global Business Consulting. These economic experts discussed the changes that have taken place in the last 12 months, what Russia’s economic and political outlook is for the next two years, and where the region is placed versus the rest of the world. They also took a detailed look at how domestic factors are expected to evolve and what their longer term impact will be.

Dr Daniel Thorniley outlined that the economic and business outlook of Russia was very good indeed compared with most other developed and even emerging markets around the world. Thorniley stated “The business environment for most companies and investors globally is going to remain strained for 2-5 more years: banks are not functioning properly, too many governments are plunging into mis-guided austerity programs and consumers are not surprisingly under severe stress. Comparatively and relatively Russia is in much better shape and providing oil stays above $97 then GDP will continue at 3.8% to 4.5% with most other indicators in that ball-park”, he concluded that “Financing remains tough and interest high for hotel investors but there is some chance that if inflation starts to fall again in 2013, then inserts rates may just be a bit less painful.”

According to Chris Weafer, Chief Strategist at Sberbank Investment Research Russia has become something of a bipolar investment market. He commented “On one hand, there is the side of Russia that mandates a higher risk premium to that of its EM peers, providing a steady stream of negative international headlines and it is the portion of the stock market mainly perceived to be vulnerable to a global economic slowdown. And on the other hand, Russia is quietly going about its business, enjoying an expanding domestic economic base, a fast-growing consumer story and a stable economy.”

The session concluded with a hard hitting Q&A session where Thorniley and Weafer were joined by Michael O’Hare, Managing Director of Horwath HTL Hungary & Russia and Dmitry Tetiouchev, Partner, Hospitality Industry Leader in the CIS at Ernst & Young.

Macro-economic overviews presented by Chris Weafer at the RHIC 2012, and Daniel Thorniley’s latest paper are available at:
